Statement from Councilman Nowakowski on Vision ZeroStatement from Councilman Nowakowski on Vision Zero

“I am supportive of Mayor Gallego’s efforts to address pedestrian safety throughout the city of Phoenix. I commend her for making this one of her early priorities. We have taken many steps towards making our streets safer: through federal grants and partnerships we have installed HAWKS throughout the city that would otherwise not exist; we have hired a street safety coordinator to focus on education and improvements; and most recently myself and Councilwoman Thelda Williams launched the first of five PSAs on roadway safety.

While I am supportive of many of the components in Vision Zero, one of my greatest concerns is ensuring we do not produce any of the harmful unintended consequences some of the other cities that have adopted Vision Zero are experiencing. I believe before committing to a Vision Zero framework we need more data and we need to develop a plan that we actually have the resources to implement.

I look forward to getting more information and data on our pedestrian fatalities, our needs and resources, and working with the Mayor, my colleagues on the City Council, staff and residents to address this important issue throughout our city.”

4/24/2019 1:20:00 AMNick Valenzuela602-495-5405
