I truly believe it is important to not only help the less fortunate, but to give in ways that promote healthy and sustainable giving.

Street giving is a term that is used to describe those that give food, money, and items directly to people experiencing homelessness out on the street. Although kind, it is not necessarily beneficial and can have a negative impact on our community, non-profit agencies and the un-sheltered individuals we are trying to assist. Last year alone, 8.25 tons of garbage was collected from the streets of downtown Phoenix after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Healthy giving is a way to give back that has meaning and impact beyond one meal. Healthy giving considers the long-term impact for individuals, the environment, and the community at large. I want to thank the Healthy Giving Council, City staff and all the volunteers that will be helping give smart over this Thanksgiving weekend. Together, with the Team Phoenix approach, we can make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate."

About the Healthy Giving Council: The Healthy Giving Council (HGC) is a coalition of faith leaders, social service providers, businesses, local government, and concerned citizens working to promote healthy and sustainable giving.
