Statement from Vice Mayor Kate Gallego on Court Ruling Allowing South Mountain Freeway Construction to ProceedStatement from Vice Mayor Kate Gallego on Court Ruling Allowing South Mountain Freeway Construction to Proceed

“Today’s U.S. District Court of Arizona ruling means the time has come to start building the South Mountain Freeway. This freeway will not only relieve one of the most heavily congested stretches of highway in the state, it will usher in transformative long-range economic development for the city and region.

Laveen and Southwest Phoenix have been planning for decades for the freeway’s arrival, and our Community and Economic Development team has developed a strategy to attract and generate high-wage Advanced Manufacturing and Advanced Business Services jobs along the corridor. Salaries in Advanced Manufacturing range from $45,000 to $130,000 and for every new job in this sector, up to four additional support positions are created. This strategy has succeeded along the already constructed sections of the Loop 202, and it will succeed in Laveen and Southwest Phoenix.

The freeway is one of the most heavily studied and publicly vetted roadway projects in Arizona history. Voters approved this project twice, it has been on planners’ maps for decades, and a final environmental impact study contained hundreds of pages of analysis and incorporated more than 8,000 public comments. It’s time to respect the will of voters and build the South Mountain Freeway to finally complete the Loop 202.”

8/19/2016 11:00:00 PMDavid Ur binato602-495-5405
