Statement from Vice Mayor Kate Gallego on Federal Charges, Trial Facing Sheriff ArpaioStatement from Vice Mayor Kate Gallego on Federal Charges, Trial Facing Sheriff Arpaio<div class="ExternalClass2EA4853B22F540B2BDFAE0EFA254EE18"><div>“With Sheriff Arpaio now facing trial for alleged federal crimes, it is outrageous that he remains in a position of leadership over a law enforcement agency.  He should resign immediately.</div><div><br></div><div>Should Sheriff Arpaio choose not to step aside, serious questions now exist for the ability of Phoenix and other law-abiding jurisdictions to work effectively with MCSO. As stewards of the taxpayers’ money, we as a City Council must seriously rethink whether it is appropriate for us to be contracting with a law enforcement agency led by a criminal defendant. I have asked the City Manager to evaluate all contracts between the City and MCSO, and have renewed my calls for the City to take common-sense steps like reducing pretrial detention so that we can keep our jail costs as low as possible and minimize the liability to Phoenix taxpayers.”</div></div>10/12/2016 6:00:00 PMDavid Urbinato602-495-5405
