Councilwoman Mendoza Shares District 8 Achievements Since Appointment Councilwoman Mendoza Shares District 8 Achievements Since Appointment

“I want to share with you the achievements our office has accomplished since I was appointed to this honorable position in August 2018. My goal has always been to work diligently to ensure District 8 continues to thrive. With the help of our amazing community, we have completed so many important projects. Here's a snapshot of some of our work:

Organized a community forum on the South-Central Extension (SCE) of the light rail, toured the city of Mesa extension to incorporate their best practices into our light rail plan, met with businesses impacted by the Mesa construction to gain ideas on how to help our businesses during light rail construction, and visited the current construction on the city of Mesa's Gilbert Road extension.

Added significant stipulations to the motion approving the two-lane design for the SCE to protect surrounding neighbors and address community concerns regarding gentrification, business assistance, and development opportunities.

Led the effort to form the SCE Transit-Oriented Development Steering Committee whose sole mission is to create guidelines based on the stipulations above.

Organized and hosted a job fair at our new Arizona@Work facility. City of Phoenix Water Services and Aviation departments along with several of our largest private employers attended to meet with applicants and conduct interviews on site.

Approved funding for critical public safety needs and supported policies for accountability and transparency, such as our body-worn camera roll-out for the Phoenix Police Department.

Collaborated with American Furniture Warehouse and Ashley Furniture Homestore for a donation to complete our Family Advocacy Center's crime victim waiting room, victim interview rooms, and front lobby.

Eliminated a bureaucratic delay preventing the Southern Hills neighborhood from getting retention basins to mitigate flooding during the monsoon season. I organized city staff and resources to ensure Southern Hills has the support they need to build those basins as soon as possible.

Attended all our district's GAIN events, volunteered at the Wilson Neighborhood Cleanup, and the Community Health Fair. We also regularly attend District 8 neighborhood meetings, village planning meetings, block watch meetings, and various community group meetings to stay connected to our constituents and keep abreast of all the current community issues, events, and updates.

Added trees to Eototo Park and accelerated the improvement plans for Eototo and Lenang, two mini-parks in South Phoenix that have been ignored since their inception.

Created partnerships with many District 8 non-profit organizations such as Black Wall Street and House of Helps, who provide valuable resources to our residents. The leaders of these amazing groups and I have worked together to ensure they receive access to city resources including grants, workforce development programs, and funding options for their community events.

Voted to accelerate T2050 funds to address our immediate street issues. Street Transportation Department representatives attended our community meetings and heard your street priorities. I approved the major list of priorities for the first two years of the plan and advocated for their immediate start.

Conducted a “pot-hole" tour of District 8 to document all major (and minor) pot-holes in our streets. I have been reporting and following-up to ensure those pot-holes are filled and encourage the community to report any street concerns they have at 602-262-6441.

Obtained funding for a new ambulance unit Laveen!

Started the Gateway Corridor, a group of businesses along Van Buren Street to ensure that area develops into a thriving business mecca.

Hired three new judges for the Phoenix Municipal Court and advocated for our Specialty Court programs, including our Veterans Court and our Behavioral Health Court.

Visited the Pickle Building bought by Chicanos Por La Causa on Van Buren Street and supported their important adaptive reuse plan for that building and property.

Co-sponsored the Trunk or Treat event in South Phoenix where hundreds of families trick-or-treated in a safe and community-driven atmosphere.

Linked generous donors with the Wilson Elementary School to provide Christmas gifts to families in need.

Included funding in the budget for a victim advocate to serve at Travis L. Williams Family Service Center.

Approved a marquee to be installed at the Broadway Heritage Neighborhood Resource Center.

Spearheaded the effort to accelerate Phase II of the Capitol – I10 light rail project.

Asked for a well-beautification project in District 8, picked a site, and hosted a community meeting to discuss their vision for that beautification project.

Co-hosted the Star-Spangled Celebration event in Laveen to honor our fallen officers and firefighters.

Helped create the Cesar Chavez Community Center Steering Committee to start building a Community Center at Cesar Chavez Park.

Advocated for special needs amenities and programming in Laveen.

I am proud of the amazing work we have been able to accomplish together. I am grateful for being able to serve the residents of District 8 and the city of Phoenix for these few months. It has truly been an amazing experience."

5/22/2019 9:00:00 PMNick Valenzuela602-495-5405
