City Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Day of Service Community EventsCity Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Day of Service Community Events<div class="ExternalClassD108DBB057214D0991928240D6E3048D"><p>​</p><table cellspacing="0" width="100%" class="ms-rteTable-default"><tbody><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width:100%;"><h3>Each January, Americans celebrate and memorialize the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a national day of service. The only federal holiday observed as a day of service is a perfect opportunity to pay tribute by transforming Dr. King's life and teachings into community action.<br></h3><p>"Service empowers individuals, strengthens our neighborhoods, and unites our communities," Phoenix Mayor Thelda Williams said. "I encourage Phoenicians to embody Dr. King's heart of service to move us closer to his vision of a united and loving community." </p><p>Starting this weekend, several MLK Day of Service events are scheduled throughout Phoenix as part of the MLK celebration. Volunteers and residents are welcome to join city staff and community partners in a "day on, not a day off" in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Saturday, Jan. 19</strong></p><p><strong>Broadway Road Cleanup</strong><br> 8 – 11:30 a.m. <br> A cleanup of a vacant lot and utility easement used by both Arizona Public Service (APS) and    Salt River Project (SRP) will be cleaned of overgrown vegetation and trash by volunteers from    APS and Keep Phoenix Beautiful. Staging for this event is at 4598 E. Broadway Road.</p><p><strong>South Central Avenue Cleanup</strong><br> 7 – 11 a.m.<br> A cleanup of South Central Avenue from Rio Salado Scenic Drive to Southern Avenue will be undertaken by volunteers from the Target Corporation and other interested community members.  This project will include light trash pickup along Central Avenue, a possible alley cleanup and refresh the fire hydrants with a coat of paint. Staging for this event will be at the Travis L. Williams Family Service Center at 4732 S. Central Ave.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Monday, Jan. 21</strong></p><p><strong>The Project Evergreen at Lindo Park </strong><br> 1-6 p.m<br> This is a restoration project of the baseball field at Lindo Park sponsored by Evergreen.  Lindo Park community residents will be on hand as well to provide volunteer support. Staging for this event will be at Lindo Park, 2230 W. Roeser Road.</p><p><strong>Encanto Park Cleanup </strong><br> 10 a.m.-12 p.m.<br> A cleanup of Encanto Park will be undertaken by 20 Starbucks employees and interested community members. They will provide volunteer support at Encanto Park to clean the lake, sweep debris from curbs and paint curbs and picnic tables. Staging for this event will be at Encanto Park,  2605 N. 15th Ave.</p><p><strong>Camelback Road Cleanup</strong><br> 8 – 11 a.m.<br> A cleanup of Camelback Road from Seventh to 19th avenues will be taken by Ballard Spahr Law firm volunteers and other interested community members. This project will consist of light trash and litter pickup along Camelback Road and painting the fire hydrants along this route.
