Hance Park will take an important step forward on Monday, May 21, when new park design concepts will be unveiled to the community during a public open house. The open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Hance Park's Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Ave.

City staff and representatives from other organizations involved in the project will be present at the open house to answer questions and listen to community feedback regarding the new design.

The design concepts also will be available for public view starting on Monday at 10 a.m. on the Hance Park Revitalization Project website: Phoenix.gov/Parks/HanceRevitalization. Those who are unable to attend the open house will have an opportunity to provide project feedback through an e-mail address listed on the website. The website also will provide project updates to the community in the coming months.

Most of the funding for the project, estimated at $100 million, will come from private donations, and Monday's open house marks the start of a fundraising campaign led by the Hance Park Partner Coalition. The coalition consists of the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, Phoenix Community Alliance and Hance Park Conservancy.

The 32-acre Hance Park is located over the Interstate-10 highway tunnel, between 5th Ave. to the west and 3rd St. to the east. The park is currently home to the Burton Barr Central Library, Japanese Friendship Garden, Irish Cultural Center and McClelland Irish Library, and Phoenix Center for the Arts. Other amenities in the park include a playground, walking paths and reservable ramadas.

Hance Park hosts numerous cultural festivals, concerts and special events year-round, and in 2017 was the site of the three-day March Madness Music Festival as part of NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four festivities in the Phoenix area. The park is also home to the annual McDowell Mountain Music Festival.

5/18/2018 10:45:00 PMGregg Bach, 602-262-4994Parks and Recreation Department602-262-6862
