The pilot program was approved by the city's Parks and Recreation Board during its October 2018 meeting.

Previously, Silent Sunday was held monthly on the fourth Sunday only. On those days, the park's roadways are closed to motor vehicle traffic, reserving them for activities such as walking, cycling, jogging and hiking.

Through the pilot program, the park's main roadway will be closed at the one-mile mark into the park from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first, second, third and fifth Sunday; while the fourth Sunday will operate as it has in the past, with all roadways closed from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. (park closure time).

The roadways in South Mountain Park/Preserve attract a variety of user groups and the pilot program is part of a process to explore ways to provide more options for those groups and increase road safety.

Visit the South Mountain Park/Preserve page for additional information about Silent Sunday activities.

11/20/2018 8:00:00 PMGregg Bach, 602-262-4994Parks and Recreation Department, Natural Resources Division602-495-5458
