Phoenix to Seek Public Input on Solid Waste IncreasePhoenix to Seek Public Input on Solid Waste Increase

Following City Council's direction, the city of Phoenix Public Works Department is seeking input from Phoenix residents on the recommendation to increase the current solid waste monthly fee of $26.80.

The fee has remained unchanged for 10 years.

As part of its community engagement plan, Phoenix Public Works has scheduled community meetings throughout the city and is providing additional opportunities for residents to share feedback through a dedicated webpage and residential survey.

The webpage with all the information about the proposed rate options is phoenix.gov/trashandrecycle.

The webpage has the community meetings schedule, the various rate options for Phoenix residents, the cost of service analysis report, the presentation to City Council and a list of frequently asked questions. In addition, customers will find an opportunity to participate in a survey about the city's trash and recycle services and will find contact information to provide comments about the proposed rate increase.

On Nov. 12, Public Works' management presented rate increase options, each offering varying levels of service to the department's approximately 400,000 residential customers.

The four options include:

Current Service - maintains the same level service that includes weekly trash and recycling collection and composting services for an additional $6.40/month (total fee of $33.20 per month).

Eliminate Composting - offers weekly trash and recycling collection and eliminates all composting services for an additional $5.65 /month (total fee of $32.45 per month).

Every Other Week Recycling – Transitions from weekly to every other week collection of recyclables, maintains weekly trash collection and composting services for an additional $5.50/month (total fee of $32.30 per month).

No Recycling and No Composting - eliminates all recycling and composting programs for an additional $4.75/month (total fee of $31.55 per month). All materials will be collected as trash and sent to the landfill.

Besides the four main options, alternate options offering a new rate to be phased in over two years are also being considered for feedback.

If a monthly rate increase is not approved, Public Works will be required to reduce programs and services by approximately $36 million annually to align expenses with current revenue. Programs proposed to be eliminated include bulk trash, household hazardous waste events, yard waste collection and composting, and reductions in staff to respond to illegal dumping concerns. Recycling collection would also transition to every other week.

The monthly rate increase has been proposed by the Public Works Department due to the increasing cost of doing business for the past 10 years, changes in the recycling market, and an increase in service demands triggered by a renewed housing boom and an influx of new residents.

Follow Phoenix Public Works on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

-30-

11/25/2019 7:00:00 AMYvette Roeder, 602-501-0620
