Construction Now Underway to Make First Street More Pedestrian and Bicycle Friendly Construction Now Underway to Make First Street More Pedestrian and Bicycle Friendly

The city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department is constructing several improvements on First Street between McKinley and Moreland streets. These improvements were identified as part of a streetscape study for First Street to enhance the livability of the downtown area as development intensity increases.

Key improvements to be made on First Street include widening the sidewalks on both sides of the street, constructing bulb-outs at intersections to narrow the pedestrian crossing distance, and adding shade trees and bicycle lanes. Existing and projected traffic volumes support the new configuration, which includes one travel lane in each direction, a center median for turns and angled on-street parking.

Additional improvements include new asphalt pavement, curb and gutter, accessible sidewalk ramps, street lights, bike racks, benches, trash receptacles, storm drain upgrades, and landscaping treatments designed to reduce storm water runoff to improve the quality and sustainability of the environment.

Similar improvements were made on First Street between Fillmore and McKinley streets in 2012.
While construction is underway on First Street business access will be maintained, curbside parking will remain temporarily restricted and one travel in each direction will be kept open. Construction is scheduled to be completed by fall 2018.

For more information visit the Street Transportation projects webpage at phoenix.gov/streets/projects or contact Lori Pearce at 480-281-1506 or lori@inroadsinfo.com.

9/6/2017 7:00:00 AMLori Pearce480-281-1506
