Phoenix to Honor Three Fallen Public Safety Workershttps://www.phoenix.gov/newsroom/police/926Police 2/10/2020 10:00:00 PMhttps://www.phoenix.gov/newssite/Lists/NewsArticle/Attachments/926/Newsroom_Police_Employee_Memorial.jpgPhoenix to Honor Three Fallen Public Safety Workers<div class="ExternalClass916BADDD259C4E3B94803777F351ACF7"><html> <p>​The City of Phoenix will honor three public safety employees who made the ultimate sacrifice as part of the City's Employee Memorial Ceremony.<br><br><img src="/policesite/MediaAssets/Rutherford.png" style="margin:5px 10px;width:148px;height:177px;vertical-align:auto;float:right;" />Paul Rutherford from the Phoenix Police Department along with Phoenix Firefighters Rick Telles and Brian Beck, Jr. will be remembered at the Thursday morning ceremony at the Orpheum Theatre honoring those who lost their lives in 2019.<br><br>Officer Paul Rutherford was killed March 21 while assisting with a traffic accident.  The officer was remembered for his 23-years of service as someone who saw being a police officer not as a job, but as a calling.  <br><br>“He made the conscious choice to be a patrol officer," said Chief Jeri Williams.  “There are many different career choices a person can make within the police department, but Officer Rutherford was a kind, dependable hero who wanted to be with people making their day better."<br><br><img src="/policesite/MediaAssets/Rick%20Telles%20Phx%20Fire.jpg" style="margin:5px;width:150px;vertical-align:auto;float:right;" />Rick Telles spent 13 years as a firefighter.  The 45-year-old father of five died January 17 2019, approximately one year after being diagnosed with throat cancer.  <br><br>The department says Telles was committed to excellence in all aspects of his profession and that made him an asset to the department and to his peers.  “Our profession is diminished in his absence," the department wrote on their Facebook page at the time of his death.<br><br>Brian Beck, Jr. was a third-generation firefighter.  The 31-year-old died on May 20, leaving behind a wife and three young kids.  His father, retired Phoenix Captain Brian Beck, Sr. said his son had malignant melanoma.<br><br><img src="/policesite/MediaAssets/Brian%20Beck%20Jr%20Phx%20Fire.jpg" style="margin:5px 10px;width:150px;vertical-align:auto;float:right;" />Beck spent 8 years with the Phoenix Fire Department, serving most of his time at Fire Station 33 in North Phoenix.  <br><br>At his funeral, Beck was remembered as someone who always knew he wanted to be a firefighter, but it was spending time with his wife and kids that brought him his greatest joys.<br><br>Phoenix Fire Chief Kara Kalkbrenner speaking at the service said, “Brian contracted this terrible disease simply because he was doing his job as a firefighter."<br><br>Both firefighter's deaths were determined to be in the line of duty, since the cancer was caused by on-the-job hazards.<br><br>The lives and sacrifice of the officer and two firefighters will be remembered Thursday at a 9 a.m. public ceremony at the Orpheum Theatre.   <br><br>Mayor Kate Gallego, City Council members, City Manager Ed Zuercher, and representatives of the city's employee unions and associations will be in attendance. In addition, Phoenix Police and Fire honor guard, pipes, and drums will perform.<br><br>Following the ceremony, employees will form a path of unity to the Employee Memorial adjacent to City Hall. Driver Drags Man Who Cut Him Off in Convenience Store Parking Lothttps://www.phoenix.gov/newsroom/police/988Police 2/21/2020 6:30:00 PMhttps://youtu.be/zo_hfqbQm80Driver Drags Man Who Cut Him Off in Convenience Store Parking Lot<div class="ExternalClassFE25E4420DF145F0955235F016A5F7B6"><html>Police are looking for the driver of a truck who ran into a man walking out of a gas station, dragging him 50 feet on the grill of the truck before taking off.<br><br>The crime happened at 27th Avenue and Peoria on Sunday night.<br><br>The victim was in a black truck when he pulled in front of white truck in the gas station parking lot.<br><br>Based on surveillance video, about 60 seconds later the driver of the white truck pulls up next to the truck parked at the pump and appears to throw his drink at the vehicle.<br><br>Less than a minute later, the driver of the black truck leaves the convenience store and the white truck slams into him while he walking, dragging his body about 50 feet before the 34-year-old victim slips under the vehicle.<br><br>That man is recovering from serious injuries.<br><br>The suspect is described as a 30-35 year old white man with red hair and a beard.  He's driving a white and black 4 door Ford Raptor with a sunroof.<br><br>If you have any information to help solve this crime, contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or <span id="ms-rterangepaste-start"></span><a href="http://www.silentwitness.org/" target="_blank">silentwitness.org</a>.<br></html></div>https://phoenix.gov/policeVideo
