He disregarded his own safety and ran towards danger to assist his partner and to protect the public."

Rutherford was struck and killed while attempting to cross the street.

Vice-Mayor Betty Guardado lead the moment of silence for the loved ones and co-workers followed by a somber playing of Echo Taps, the traditional bugle call played by two buglers in echo fashion.

The Phoenix Police Department Honor Guard, the Phoenix Fire Department Honor Guard and the Honor Guard Pipes & Drums also participated in the event.

Following the ceremony inside the theatre, fire & police employees formed a path of unity to the Employee Memorial adjacent to City Hall. The glass block memorial includes the names etched into the blocks of the 86 employees who lost their lives during their duties for the City of Phoenix.

The bricks go back as far as 1925 to Phoenix Police Officer Haze Burch who was shot and killed while trying to stop two men siphoning gas from a car downtown. The two suspects responsible for his death were also wanted in both Texas and Montana for killing law enforcement officers.

“Those lost gave the ultimate sacrifice as they worked to make Phoenix the magnificent city it is today," Mayor Kate Gallego wrote in a proclamation setting aside February 9-15, 2020 as Phoenix Employee Remembrance Week.

The Mayor invited all residents to join in honoring the exceptional individuals who died while serving the people of Phoenix.

https://phoenix.gov/policeNewspoliceFlags outside City Employee MemorialPolice@PhxFire @CityofPhoenixAZ @OrpheumPhxTelles, Rutherford, Beck, MemorialPolice Main PIO phoenixpd.pio@phoenix.govhttps://www.phoenix.gov/newssite/Lists/MediaContact/Attachments/36/Police2.pngFire Duty PIO 602-534-0953PIO.PFD@phoenix.govhttps://www.phoenix.gov/newssite/Lists/MediaContact/Attachments/38/Fire2.pngPhoenixPolice
