Line of Duty Deaths 1990-1999

fallen officer Briggs On June 20, 1990, Officer Patrick O. Briggs #4317 was killed when a motorist pulled in front of him as he was pursuing a speeding motorist on his police motorcycle.  Officer Briggs swerved to avoid the collision, struck a raised median and tree on 7th Street, just north of Thunderbird Road.

Officer Briggs was 27 years old and had been an officer for seven years.  

He is survived by his parents.

 Sergeant Danny L. Tunney    Sergeant John W. Domblinsky


On July 26, 1990, Sergeant John W. Domblinsky #2647 and Sergeant Danny L. Tunney #1437 were killed when an impaired driver crossed the center line and collided head on with their unmarked police vehicle at 10800 N. 7th Street.

Sergeant Domblinsky was 42 years old and had served on the department for 17 years.  He is survived by his wife and two children.

Sergeant Tunney was 47 years old, and had 23 years on the department.  He is survived by his wife and 5 children.



fallen officer KolodziejOn September 4, 1991, Officer Leonard L. Kolodziej #2387 was killed while responding to a 9-1-1 call at 4337 N. 20th Street.  He was struck several times by a barrage of bullets fired by a sniper barricaded in a home.  A construction worker was wounded and a cyclist was also killed by the shooter.

Officer Kolodziej was 43 years old and had been on the department for 19 years.  

He is survived by his wife and 3 children.





fallen officer KiefferOn May 7, 1977, Sergeant David �Marty� Keiffer #2014 was seriously injured in a traffic collision when a drunk driver struck his car at 16th Street and McDowell Road.  As a result of his injuries, Sergeant Keiffer was rendered a quadriplegic.  

He continued to work for the department until retiring on September 13, 1991.  

On May 21, 1997, he died after succumbing to the injuries he had received 20 years earlier.

Sergeant Kieffer was 53 years old and survived by his wife and children.




fallen officer AtkinsonOn March 26, 1999, Officer Marc T. Atkinson #5930 began following a suspicious vehicle, occupied by three suspects, in the area of 31st Avenue and Thomas Road.  The driver lured Officer Atkinson into an industrial area at 30th Avenue and Catalina Drive where he was ambushed by gunfire and killed.  A citizen who witnessed the incident engaged the suspects in a gunfight with his own weapon, seriously wounding one. The other two suspects fled but were later arrested.


Officer Atkinson was 28 years old and had been an officer for almost five years. 

 He is survived by his wife and seven month old son.




fallen officer BeufOn November 1, 1999, Officer Goelet A. Beuf #6896 contacted two suspicious people in the area of 23rd Avenue and Lone Cactus Road.  One suspect, who was in possession of drugs and had outstanding warrants, ran and was chased by the officer.  A struggle ensued with the suspect and Officer Beuf falling into the roadway.  They were both struck by a semi-truck which resulted in fatal injuries to Officer Beuf and the suspect surviving.  

Officer Beuf was 33 years old and had been on the department for over a year.  

He is survived by his wife and four young children.
