On May 26, 2010, Officer Travis P. Murphy #8474 responded to a report of shots fired. The suspect fled, but a description of his vehicle was broadcast over the police radio. Several minutes later police dispatch received reports of a male who was seen attempting to hide in a or under a vehicle under a tarp at a vacant home in the area of 19th Avenue and Fairmount Avenue. Officer Murphy, along with several other officers, responded to the scene and started searching for the suspect on foot. Officer Murphy encountered the suspect and was shot. Officers placed him in a patrol car and took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds a short time later.
Officer Murphy was 29 years old and had served with the department for four and a half years.
He is survived by his wife, two year old daughter and two week old son.
On May 19, 2013, Officer Daryl Raetz, #8899 and his partner were finishing the processing of the scene from a DUI stop in the area of 51st Avenue and Cambridge. At that time, Officer Raetz was struck by another vehicle, which was traveling northbound on 51st Avenue. Officer Raetz was transported to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.
Officer Raetz was 29 years old and had been with the department for approximately six years. He was also a member of the Armed Forces.
Officer Raetz leaves behind a wife and a daughter.
On March 3rd, 2014 Detective John Hobbs, #5624 along with another officer were attempting to make contact with a violent suspect. Upon contact with the suspect, Detective Hobbs and his partner became involved in a gun battle at which time Detective Hobbs was fatally wounded. His partner is still recovering from his wounds.
Detective Hobbs had just completed his 21st year with the Phoenix Police Department.
Detective Hobbs is survived by his wife and their three children.
