The Phoenix Police historical markers are scattered throughout the valley, the bright blue rectangles perched atop sturdy gray metal poles. There is no rhyme or reason to the locations, not unlike the chance that each spot would someday be marked by tragedy. Only the widows, the parents and children and friends of the victims would understand how a piece of blue metal bearing the name of their loved one could possibly become something so precious. In all, 35 Phoenix police families know and understand that their loved will never be forgotten.
The first line-of-duty death occurred when Haze Burch was shot and killed as he attempted to stop two men from siphoning gasoline from a car on February 5, 1925.
