Applicants who possess an Associates Degree (2-year college degree) or a higher degree are NOT required to take the Written Exam, but are still required to register for the Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) (See
Steps 2 & 3).
Applying from out-of-state with an Associates Degree or higher?
Do NOT schedule a trip to Arizona until you have completed
Step 1 and are assigned a Background Investigator. After completing
Step 1, call employment services at
602-262-6925 for further instruction regarding the
out-of-state hiring process.
Complete AZPOST Personal History Packet
This step must be completed before you can register for a written exam.
Visit the AZPOST website at
my.azpost.gov and complete a Personal History Packet. AZPOST is the state governing body for all law enforcement officers in AZ. You will be prompted to share the personal history packet with the agency you are applying for. Choose
Upon completion, you will be provided an
AZPOST Form ID Number specific to your application. Record this number (screenshot/write it down) for your records. After completion of the AZPOST personal history packet , PROCEED TO STEP 2. You will not be in the hiring process until Step 2 is completed.
Register for the Written Exam
Register for the Written Exam (and the POPAT) on the jobs website: search for "Police Recruit".

In-state applicants are encouraged to take the exam in person. Typically the online exam is for out-of-state applicants.
In person exams will receive a confirmation email approximately 1-2 days prior to the exam date. Online exams will receive a sign-up email for the online test in approximately 5-7 business days.

Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT)
This test is offered the same day as the written exam. Arrive to the exam in appropriate physical fitness attire. The test will be administered at the Phoenix Regional Police Academy

The POPAT consists of the following events:
Solid Fence Climb
Chain Link Fence Climb
165 lb. Body Drag
99 Yard Obstacle (agility) Course
500 Yard Run

Qualified applicants will be contacted after completion of the physical agility assessment (POPAT) for
If you haven't been contacted within 2-3 weeks, call the Employment Services Bureau (ESB) at
602-262-6925 to find out the status of your background packet.
After successful completion of the POPAT, applicants will be contacted by a background investigator to schedule an interview.
Applicants will be given a polygraph examination (lie detector test) administered by a trained, professional examiner. The test will confirm information noted on the applicant's background packet.
Applicants will be evaluated by a licensed psychologist.
Applicants will undergo a complete medical examination given by a licensed physician
Controlled Substance Screening
Applicants will be required to submit to a urinalysis at some point in the hiring process.
