​​​Applicants who possess an Associates Degree (2 yr college degree) or HIGHER, will not be required to take the PHXPD Written Exam​​​
(Applicants with a college degree are still required to register for the POPAT by following the link below,​ in STEP 2)​

If you are applying from out of state and have an AA Degree or higher, DO NOT schedule a trip out here until you have Step 1 completed and are assigned a Background Investigator.  Once you have completed Step 1, call employment services at  602-262-6925 for further instruction regarding the hiring process. ​


STEP 1: COMPLETE AZPOST PERSONAL HISTORY PACKET​

(This step must be completed before you can register for a written exam)

  • Step 1 will take you to the AZPOST website (my.azpost.gov​). AZPOST is the state governing body for all law enforcement officers in AZ. 

  • Complete an AZPOST Personal History Statement (PH) at -->  my.azpost.gov, and complete the Personal History Packet. You will be prompted to share the personal history packet with the agency you are applying for. Choose PHXPD. Upon completion, you will be provided an AZPOST ID# specific to your application. Record this number (screenshot/write it down) for your records as this will be needed in step 2 to register for the written/online exam.  

Step 2: REGISTER FOR WRITTEN OR ONLINE EXAM

    • In search box, type​  "Police Recruit"

      • You will receive a confirmation email approximately 1-2 days prior to the exa​​m date. ​​​​

    • Online Test: Generally for out of state applicants. To speed up the process, we highly encourage in-state applicants to take the exam in person.

      • You will receive a sign-up email for the online test in approximately 5-7 business days. ​

STEP 3: PEACE OFFICER PHYSICAL APTITUDE TEST (POPAT)

Offered the same day as the written exam. Arrive to the exam in appropriate physical fitness attire. The test will be administered at the Phoenix Regional Police Academy 10001 S. 15th Ave Phoenix, AZ 85041.

The POPAT consists of the following events:

  1. Solid Fence Climb
  2. Chain Link Fence Climb
  3. 165lb Body Drag
  4. 99 Yard Obstacle (agility) Course
  5. 500 Yard Run

**Qualified applicants will be contacted after completion of the physical agility assessment (POPAT).**

If you haven't been contacted within 2-3 weeks, call the Employment Services Bureau (ESB) at 602-262-6925 to find out the status of your background packet.

 

STEP 4: BACKGROUND INTERVIEW

After successful completion of the POPAT, applicants will be contacted by a background investigator to schedule an interview.


STEP 5: POLYGRAPH INTERVIEW

Applicants will be given a polygraph examination (lie detector test) administered by a trained, professional examiner. The test will confirm information noted on the applicant's background packet.


STEP 6: PSHYCOLOGIAL TEST

Applicants will be evaluated by a licensed psychologist.


STEP 7: MEDICAL EXAMINATION

Applicants will undergo a complete medical examination given by a licensed physician


STEP 8: CONTROLLED​ SUBSTANCE SCREENING

Applicants will be required to submit to a urinalysis at some point in the hiring process.
