Project Overview

The First Street Pedestrian Improvement Project is part of the greater Downtown strategy to place a higher priority on enhancing the attractiveness of the downtown streets and the livability of the downtown area as development intensity increases. The master plan for the First Street Streetscape Study: Van Buren Street to Moreland Street was finalized in 2012. As part of this project, the construction of the two blocks between Fillmore and McKinley streets was completed in 2012. As part of the next phase for this project, the design for the four blocks between McKinley and Moreland streets has been finalized.
The project will continue the enhanced pedestrian experience and encourage more pedestrian activity north to Margaret T. Hance Park. Improvements for First Street include a narrowed roadway, including new curb and gutter and asphalt pavement, reducing the roadway width to accommodate one lane of traffic in each direction; bike lanes; angled and parallel on-street parking; wide sidewalks with accessible ramps; street and pedestrian lighting; bike racks; benches, trash receptacles, water line relocation; storm drain improvements; and landscaping treatments designed to improve the quality and sustainability of the environment.  Landscape treatments will include the use of permeable pavers to reduce storm water runoff and direct storm water to landscape planters.
