Phase I of the Grand Canalscape project will include a 10-12-foot-wide multi-use path, dusk-to-dawn pedestrian lighting, neighborhood links to local streets and signalized trail crossings at 7th Avenue, Central Avenue and 7th Street.

The Grand Canalscape Phase I Project represents the first phase of the larger trail and crossing project which will eventually result in a contiguous trail along the Grand Canal between Glendale and Tempe.  The vision for the Grand Canalscape originated with Arizona Forward who remains actively involved in the planning of the project.  The concept and design specifics are being developed by the Street Transportation Department.  The project is also an off-shoot of the recently completed ReinventPHX community outreach effort.

The overall goal of the Grand Canalscape Project is two-fold.  The primary intent is to develop a safe route for bicycle and pedestrian traffic along the Grand Canal bank that includes crossings facilities at the major streets.  The secondary intent is to re-integrate the canals into the surrounding communities by incorporating public art, minimal landscaping and neighborhood access points to the pathway to provide better visibility, access and ultimately appreciation of the canal system in Phoenix.

Funding includes $4.2 million of the city of Phoenix Municipal Aesthetics Program funds provided by Salt River Project which operates the canal and $700,000 provided by the city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department and Arts Commission.
