The geometric pattern of Fernandez's terrazzo floor – approximately 440' by 40' – was inspired by the outline of an airplane's horizontal stabilizer, called a tail plane. The Phoenix painter worked closely with the PHX Sky Train design and construction team of HOK Architects, Gannett Fleming engineers, and the Hensel Phelps Construction Company to integrate the design into the station. The floor's rhythmic geometric patterns and sweeping bands include ten colors. Fernandez heightened the surface's reflective qualities by adding aggregates of recycled and crushed glass and mirror. The floor was produced by Advance Terrazzo, in Phoenix.
