Martin Luther King black-and-white historic photoEach year the Phoenix Human Relations Commission, in collaboration with the city Equal Opportunity department, recognizes the accomplishments of people who have made an impact on the quality of life of Phoenix residents and contributed significantly to creating a compassionate and socially just community.

The Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Living the Dream awards are presented at the annual Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Breakfast sponsored by the Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee.

Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement Award

This award recognizes one exceptional individual who has made Phoenix a better place to live by promoting social and economic justice, defending civil rights and enhancing the dignity of all people. In his 22-year tenure with the Phoenix City Council, Mr. Goode worked tirelessly to ensure these rights for all residents. Guided by a deeply held belief in equality for all people, his life exemplifies a powerful commitment to improving the quality of life in Phoenix, especially for young people.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Living the Dream Awards

This award recognizes individuals who exemplify the ideals of Dr. King through their personal commitment to human rights and social justice.

Eligibility Requirements

 Award recipients and current elected officials, Phoenix Human Relations commissioners and Awards Program Committee members are not eligible for nomination.
