The City of Phoenix is looking to hire Senior Utility Technicians in both of our Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Divisions. Senior Utility Technicians may be required to perform duties in a specialized functional area in support of water distribution or wastewater collection activities. Instruction and general supervision are received from the Utility Crew Chief who reviews work by making job site visits and/or reviewing reports.
Water Distribution:
The Water Distribution Division is a 24-hour, 7-day/week operation responsible for the maintenance and repair of over 7,000 miles of water distribution main lines and 403,700 water service connections, over 163,000 valves and 55,000 fire hydrants. The division has five water service yards located throughout the City. This position participates in a scheduled standby rotation in response to emergencies. This position assists in leading, directing, training, and participating in the repair and maintenance of the water distribution system. The Senior Utility Technician performs a full range of construction duties in skilled installation, maintenance, repair, or routine maintenance of the water distribution system; oversees all other safety practices at work sites to ensure the safe and effective protection of workers and the public; completes all applicable paperwork such as daily reports and work orders, maintenance records; uses hydraulic, pneumatic, and hand tools to break pavement, excavate and backfill trenches. In addition, this position efficiently and safely operates a backhoe and utility truck with a trailer; transports construction equipment to and from work sites; and oversees projects to completion.
Wastewater Collection Division:
The Wastewater Collection Division is a 24-hour, 7-day a week operation responsible for the maintenance and repair of over 4900 miles of sanitary sewer main lines with over 105,000 sanitary sewer structures and 425,000 service connections. The division has four area maintenance yards, a closed-circuit television inspection section, and a lift station section. For the Wastewater Collection Division, this position operates hydraulic and mechanical sewer cleaning equipment and leads crews in the maintenance of the City's sanitary sewer system. Additionally, this position performs sampling of sanitary sewers for odor and corrosion control, prepares, and forwards reports of data to section / yard management. This position leads, directs, trains, and participates in the work of a small crew engaged in skilled installation, maintenance, repair, or routine maintenance of the wastewater collection system. This position supervises the excavation, shoring, backfilling of trenches and sewer line cleaning. In addition, this position efficiently and safely operates a backhoe and a utility truck with a trailer to transport crews, jet hydro vac, and materials to jobsites and oversees projects to completion.
The Utility Locating Division is responsible for identifying City of Phoenix underground water, wastewater, and reclaimed infrastructure. This team utilizes GIS, As-builts, Quarter Section maps, and other forms of infrastructure mapping to identify utilities via the use of color coordinated marking paints.
