Bulk Trash is Changing!

A new, appointment-based collection system for bulk trash items will be replacing the current quarterly collection program on September 30, 2024. Here’s what you need to know.

Customers will use an online portal to select a bulk trash collection date available for their address (check back here for a link to the portal in late August).
Once a pickup is scheduled, customers can place bulk items at the edge of their property no sooner than 7 days before their scheduled date.
All customers will be allowed up to 4 bulk trash collections per year.
Bulk trash piles should be no more than 10 cubic yards (approx. 17 ft. X 4 ft. X 4 ft.)
The new program will do away with bulk trash collection in alleys.
Placement guidelines and acceptable/prohibited items remain unchanged.
All bulk trash collection on or after September 30, 2024 should be scheduled online.

About Bulk Trash Services

Bulk trash consists of materials that are too large and must not be placed in the garbage or recycling container. Materials such as furniture, small appliances, toilets and large amounts of vegetation are often considered bulk trash. Bulk trash is currently collected from city-serviced residences four times each year. There are specific guidelines that must be followed or we cannot collect bulk trash from your property. Please read the Dos and Don'ts on this page.

Please be aware that the weeks of bulk trash placement and collection can invite possible illegal dumping. It is important to stay vigilant and report any kind of suspicious activity to the police or the Public Works Department.

Bulk Trash Placement

City ordinance allows nine days prior to the scheduled collection week to place bulk trash out for collection. It is a violation of city ordinance to place trash out before the listed “Placement Begins On” date. Please separate your green organics bulk from the bulky trash.

Bulk trash must be placed out by 6 a.m. on the “Collection Begins Week Of” date.
If you have curbside collection of trash containers, place your bulk trash on the edge of your property, parallel to the street or curb and at least 5 feet away from any fixed objects (see illustration "Curbside placement" below).
Bulk trash crews will only pick up piles placed close to the edge of your property. Crews can only reach up to 5 feet on your property.
If you have alley collection of large black trash containers, place pile in the alley along your property line only. Avoid touching wall and/or blocking alley access. See illustration "Alley placement" below.
Do not place piles on water meters or next to fixed objects or parked vehicles.

Do:

Follow the dates for bulk trash placement
Sweep or rake area after collection, if necessary
Securely bag and tie all grass, leaves, weeds, twigs and hedge clippings before placing out for bulk trash
Cut tree trimmings down to less than 12" in diameter and 4' in length

Don't Include:

More than 20 cubic yards per residence which is similar to the size of a SUV
Loose debris and litter, and any ordinary household trash
Loose grass, leaves, weeds, twigs and hedge clippings
Household hazardous waste (HHW), such as antifreeze, pool chemicals, oil, batteries and paint
Community piles – avoid combining piles from multiple households. Bulk trash crews will only collect debris from one property at a time.
Materials placed in the Bagster bags
Materials such as bricks, concrete, dirt, rocks, asphalt and roofing shingles/tiles
Construction or demolition materials in excess of 25 pounds or over four feet long
Metal or car parts in excess of 20 pounds or over four feet long
Tires, any shape or size
Glass such as windows, shower doors, patio doors, mirrors, fluorescent tubes, etc.
Tree trunks or stumps longer than 4 feet and bigger than 12 inches in diameter
Large appliances that use refrigerants such as freezers, refrigerators and air conditioners. For appliance recycling options, visit the Appliance Recycling page.

Illegal dumping

Illegal dumping – also known as “midnight dumping” and “open dumping” is the dumping of trash without legal permission at another location. This includes dumping yard waste, appliances, tires and other garbage in alleys, dumpsters, vacant lots and open desert locations.
