The city offers the following educational services and networking opportunities to help SBE firms connect to new business opportunities.

Small Business Assistance 

Management and Technical Assistance program

The Management and Technical Assistance (MTA) Program sponsored by the Community & Economic Development Department offers the owners of Phoenix-bases small businesses an opportunity to work with experienced private sector consultants and community organizations at no cost.  Expertise is available in nine specific technical areas:  

  • General Business Planning
  • Marketing
  • Accounting 
  • Financing and Loan Packaging 
  • Organizational Development
  • Human Resource Planning
  • Information Systems
  • Quality Control
  • Public and Private Procurement 

MTA consultants can guide you through the process of developing a marketing plan, setting up an accounting system, planning employee benefits, developing a strategic business plan or preparing a bid proposal.  Wherever you may need assistance, find out if the MTA Program can help your business.  

Expansion Assistance and Development (EXPAND) Program

The department's Expansion Assistance and Development (EXPAND) program supplies additional collateral on business expansion loans to support companies in obtaining loans from area lending institutions.  The program works with conventional commercial loans or SBA (U. S. Small Business Administration) loans.  

Collateral dollars are available up to 25 percent of approved loan amount (50 percent in Phoenix Enterprise Community) to a maximum of $150,000.

Open Vendor Hours for Goods & Non-Professional Services  

The Finance Department provides open vendor hours every Wednesday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at its Purchasing division located at the Calvin C. Goode Building, 251 W. Washington St., 8th floor. This is an opportunity for business owners to meet with city purchasing staff regarding vendors' services and products.  No reservation is required.

Construction Subcontracting Networking Events 

The Streets Transportation Department conducts networking events for certified subcontractors to network with prime contractors and learn about city programs, upcoming opportunities and program updates.  Events are hosted every six months.
