Supervisor's Guide to Understanding Anabolic Androgenic Steroids

Several symptoms can indicate that someone is abusing AAS. Symptoms may include the following:

  • Visible increase in body mass over a short period of time (usually months)
  • Fluid retention (bloating)
  • Noticeable acne and/or oily skin
  • Mood swings, particularly if aggressive
  • Unreasonable emotional responses to situations
  • Voice changes (such as deepening voices in women)
  • Facial hair growth in women
  • Multiple incidents of "use of force" or complaints of improper outbursts and attitude

What Should You Do:

Although you may see one of the above indications of abuse, you should contact your personnel director for assistance in deciding if a "for cause" test is warranted. If your personnel director agrees and advises you to move forward, you should follow the steps as you would for any "for cause" drug test. If you are unaware of the procedures, again contact personnel.
