What you'll do

The student will be a Program Assistant and report to Harmony Project’s Executive Director. The Program Assistant will strengthen our organization’s ability to serve youth in Phoenix by providing overall coordination of our creative youth development programming, including but not limited to support for collection and management of student data, support in communicating with families, design and administration of program evaluation, support for college applications; and other related duties as assigned. The Program Assistant’s efforts will support Harmony Project’s goals of maintaining attendance, retention, satisfaction, and matriculation rates of at least 80%. They will work directly with our Executive Director, Teaching Artists, students and their families, staff of our program partners, and community leaders. Throughout their experience, they will enhance their interpersonal skills and learn strategies for providing culturally relevant and accessible music education to underserved students.

Specific responsibilities

​​The Program Assistant will: 

  • (1) Strive to create and implement programming that is culturally responsive, community-based, and anti-racist, aligning with Harmony Project's mission. 

  • (2) Engage with the surrounding community to ensure HP is serving changing needs of its constituents. 

  • (3) Support Teaching Artists as both a team and an individual. 

  • (4) Provide on-site supervision and support group classes, ensembles, and other program activities. 

  • (5) Assist with concerts and activities. 

  • (6) Support program evaluation effort 

  • (7) Help collect and manage student data. 

  • (8) Provide support in communicating with families. 

  • (9) Conduct youth development and leadership activities as part of our Lead Program. 

  • (10) Strengthen partnerships with all stakeholders (students, families, Teaching Artists, program partners, community leaders, and organizations, and donors)

  • (11) Support Harmony Project students' college applications.  Strive to create and implement programming that is culturally responsive, community based and anti-racist, aligning with Harmony Project’s mission


Desired qualifications​

The ideal Program Assistant candidate should demonstrate a passion for arts as a vehicle for social change and the management skills to translate Harmony Project’s mission into concrete results. Additionally, we are looking for someone who possesses the following: 

  • (1) A College education with a strong background in youth education and program management, preferably in the field of music or community development 

  • (2) Passion for creative youth development

  • (3) Enthusiasm for community-based, social change work

  • (4) Excellent communication skills with program staff and families

  • (5) Ability to thrive in a continually evolving environment

  • (6) Strong Computer and Technical skills 

  • (7) Good time management skills  


Meet the supervisor

Executive Director Diogo Pereira

Diogo Pereira, conductor and social entrepreneur, embraces two passions: music and social justice. "I  strongly believe that music can be a tool to equalize opportunities." Diogo was born in Brazil and is the Founder and Executive Director of the Harmony Project Phoenix, a mentoring program that uses music as a tool for social inclusion. He earned degrees in conducting at Bard College (MFA) in New York and Arizona State University (DMA). In 2013, Diogo became part of a visionary TED Prize Wish and joined the Sistema Fellows program at the New England Conservatory.

Harmony Project Phoenix

Harmony Project Phoenix (Harmony Project) is a research-based multi-year mentoring program for underserved youth, ages 5-18+, that uses music for positive development and social inclusion. Our mission is to harness the transformative power of music to increase access to higher education for underserved students by removing systemic barriers to achievement through academic and social support.    We serve 250+ students across 40 zip codes in the Phoenix area. Our major programming includes a conservatory music academy, cultural ensembles, Teaching Artists in Residence, Early Childhood Orchestra, and American Sign Language Choir – all offered at no cost to students.

About the program

The Phoenix ArtCorps​​

The Phoenix ArtCorps is a student employment program from the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture  that seeks to provide students with​ the comprehensive skills, mentorship, and experience ​they need to launch their arts and culture careers. Over the course of the 2023-2024 academic year​, each student works 400 hours for $17/hr (around 15 to 20 hours a week), with additional stipends and professional development opportunities. To apply, students must be current or recently graduated undergraduate students at a community college, university, or other institution of higher education based in Phoenix (or live in Phoenix themselves). Applicants must be at least 18 years old. There are no other enrollment requirements. Students do not need to be majoring in the arts or similar fields to apply.
