About this Student Worker Position

The Education and Engagement assistant will work with the Curator of Engagement, Curator of Education, and Librarian in the planning, execution, and evaluation of Open Voice, a public program designed to encourage and increase multi-community participation at the museum. Open Voice is an object-based educational and public program that engages local artists, a broad range of communities and community organizations, and museum staff in informal discussions about art and personal and community identity. The assistant will attend and help document the program’s brainstorming meetings, and dialogues with various museum staff involved with program development, as well as with audience and community members. With our current focus on engaging underserved communities in particular, the assistant will participate in and learn different strategies to engage multiple communities in the development of this object-based museum program, as well as related in-person and online resources and actionable evaluation tools.


Specific responsibilities

  • Help the Education and Engagement staff prepare materials for Open Voice programs, related community forums, and evaluation surveys and focus groups.
  • Assists in the development of innovative community outreach and engagement concepts and activities related to the Open Voice project.
  • Work with the Education and Engagement team to actively gather and facilitate community engagement and feedback, including audience and community research assignments and preparation of materials to engage community entities/stakeholders, i.e., lesson plans, surveys, and questionnaires.
  • Assists the Education and Engagement staff with creating flyers and social media content that is inclusive and engaging of a broad range of communities.

 

Desired qualifications

Successful candidates should be self-sufficient, strong oral, writing, and research skills with an eye for detail, an enthusiasm for public speaking, and strong customer service skills. They should be able to learn quickly and be confident in their abilities to take on new challenges. Preference is given to candidates with community engagement / museum / art education experience.

With years of experience as a director and supervisor working in and with various arts and cultural organizations, my goal is to develop and support a team that focuses on creative and innovative programming that engages multiple communities. I believe that communication is a key component of effective leadership, which is why I focus on listening to feedback and fostering honest communication between my team members. I lead with integrity and support my staff as they work toward their professional goals. I am deeply committed to the value of art and culture in people’s lives, and that includes the staff and employees I work with. Thus, I seek constantly to make for employees learning experiences out of the development and implementation of educational and public programming, helping them to develop complex problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity skills that will benefit their career development moving forward.

The Phoenix ArtCorps​​

The Phoenix ArtCorps is a student employment program from the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture that seeks to provide students with​ the comprehensive skills, mentorship, and experience ​they need to launch their arts and culture careers. Over the course of the 2023-2024 academic cycle​, each student works 400 hours for $17/hr (around 15 to 20 hours a week), with additional stipends and professional development opportunities. To apply, students must be current or recently graduated undergraduate students at a community college, university, or other institution of higher education based in Phoenix (or live in Phoenix themselves). Applicants must be at least 18 years old. There are no other enrollment requirements. Students do not need to be majoring in the arts or similar fields to apply.
