What you'll do

The Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestras (PYSO) is seeking a motivated and organized individual to join our team as an Operations Assistant as part of the City of Phoenix’s ArtCorps program.  In this role, you will provide essential support to the organization's day-to-day operations, ensuring the smooth running of rehearsals, concerts, and various administrative tasks including work in the music library to support conductors in music preparation and support in organizing and implemented our Music Memory program. The ideal candidate is passionate about classical music, possesses excellent communication skills, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. This position reports to the Operations Manager. There are in person events such as rehearsals and performances the assistant will be required to attend as well as meetings.  Other work can be done remotely when possible.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Assist Operations Manager in planning and implementation of rehearsal and concert production.
  • Support conducting staff in music preparation and organization of music library. 
  • Support the organization in generating mailings and other communication to help spread awareness of PYSO.
  • Support Operations Manager and Artistic and General Director in executing our Music Memory Education program including helping to organize and recruit school groups to attend the concert.

Desired qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; a college or university program in progress is desired. 
  • Previous experience in music administration, event management, or related fields is desirable. 
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with a keen attention to detail. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Proficiency in using office software applications, including Microsoft Office and Google Suites. 
  • Familiarity with music notation software and databases is a plus, but not required. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and adapt to changing priorities. 
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, as required by rehearsals and performances. 
  • Passion for classical music and a commitment to supporting youth in their musical endeavors.  ​

Christopher (Chris) has dedicated over seven years to the symphonic arts, carving a remarkable career behind the scenes that embodies his passion for the performing arts. His journey commenced as an Assistant Stage Manager for the illustrious Phoenix Symphony, where he honed his craft and developed a deep appreciation for the intricacies of symphonic productions. Through his dedication ​and unwavering commitment to excellence, Chris has risen through the ranks and currently serves as the esteemed Operations Manager for the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestras (PYSO). From a young age, Chris found himself irresistibly drawn to the magic that unfolded backstage in various artistic disciplines. At the tender age of twelve, he took his first steps into the world of backstage theater, and from that moment on, he was captivated by the behind-the-scenes enchantment. Over the years, whether working on theater productions, ballet performances, or symphonic masterpieces, Chris has discovered a sense of belonging, with backstage becoming his true artistic home.    Throughout his career, Chris has cultivated an extensive and diverse portfolio, enriching his experience by collaborating with numerous esteemed arts organizations across the valley. He has had the privilege of contributing his talents to organizations such as Desert Stages Theatre, The Phoenix Theatre Company, The Phoenix Symphony, and Ballet Arizona, where he honed his expertise and contributed to the seamless execution of unforgettable performances. As the Operations Manager for the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestras, Chris has found a profound sense of purpose in supporting the development of young musicians and fostering a nurturing environment for their artistic growth. Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestras

The Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestras serves to expand horizons through music while developing the next generation of artists, patrons and leaders.  Through orchestral training, educational outreach and innovative programming, PYSO has been expanding access to music throughout the valley for 72 years.  We believe in the transformational power of music and are dedicated to ensuring as many children as possible have access to music in their lives.

The Phoenix ArtCorps​​

The Phoenix ArtCorps is a student employment program from the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture  that seeks to provide students with​ the comprehensive skills, mentorship, and experience ​they need to launch their arts and culture careers. Over the course of the 2023-2024 academic cycle​, each student works 400 hours for $17/hr (around 15 to 20 hours a week), with additional stipends and professional development opportunities. To apply, students must be current or recently graduated undergraduate students at a community college, university, or other institution of higher education based in Phoenix (or live in Phoenix themselves). Applicants must be at least 18 years old. There are no other enrollment requirements. Students do not need to be majoring in the arts or similar fields to apply.
