Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries have dramatically risen in the United States. These rechargeable batteries are found in electric bikes, mopeds, and scooters. Damaged or unstable batteries and improper charging, storage, and disposal can cause batteries to overheat, leading to an explosive, aggressive fire that rapidly spreads. These fires are also challenging to extinguish and can reignite.​ Call 911 if your battery starts to smoke or catches fire.

Only purchase and use devices with a reputable testing agency mark, such as UL. These show the product has been safety tested.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for charging and storage. Only use the correct cord and power adapter made for the device.​

Always plug directly into a wall electrical outlet for charging.

Batteries should be stored away from anything flammable. (Ex. Pillow, bed, or couch)

Do not leave devices unattended while charging them or charge them overnight.

Keep batteries and devices at room temperature. Keep away from direct sunlight and any heat source.

Do not place lithium-ion batteries in the trash or recycling bin. Customers with a City of Phoenix residential solid waste account are eligible for one Household Hazardous Waste at-home collection per year at no additional cost. Additionally, anyone can find an approved battery recycling center near you here.

Never block your primary way in or out of a room/apartment.
