West Missouri Avenue Bicycle & Pedestrian Improvements Project

Project Overview
The council approved comprehensive Phoenix Bicycle Master Plan includes identification of 39 priority corridors for improvement to make the city’s roadways safer for all users, with a primary focus on promotion of safe environments for increased cycling as a means of transportation and recreation.

The Missouri Avenue corridor is identified in the bicycle master plan as a key corridor for improvement, primarily because of east-west connectivity to existing and planned bicycle, pedestrian and transit infrastructure.
Due to connectivity of the corridor with adjacent bicycle master plan projects, and the larger bicycle network, the city applied for and was awarded a Maricopa Association of Governments Design Assistance Grant to fund a project assessment report that identifies safety improvements for the Missouri Avenue bicycle corridor that will provide a low-stress environment for bicyclists and a safer environment for pedestrians.

Missouri Avenue is a collector street in Central Phoenix one-half mile south of Bethany Home Road, and one-half mile north of Camelback Road.  The city identified Missouri Avenue from 15th Avenue to 43rd Avenue for bicycle facility improvements because as a collector street it is part of the city grid system, and has lower vehicle counts than segments to the east towards Central Avenue and Seventh Street, and other adjacent arterial roadways in the central Phoenix.  As a primarily two lane roadway west of 19th Avenue, Missouri Avenue will provide a safe, easy, low-stress route for bicyclists.

The proposed plan for the project maintains the existing number of vehicular travel lanes on Missouri Avenue from 15th Avenue to 43rd Avenue and primarily includes bike lanes with associated intersection improvements.  The proposed improvements for this project include:

  • Bike Lanes;
  • Intersection Pavement Markings and Improvements at 35th Avenue, 27th Avenue, 23rd Avenue, and 19th Avenue;
  • Preliminary I-17 Bicycle and Pedestrian Overpass Concepts;
  • Signage;
  • Shared Lane Markings;
  • Traffic Calming Resulting from Reduced Vehicle Lane Widths;
  • Improved Connectivity to Light Rail on 19th Avenue and Future Expansions on 43rd Avenue.

As part of the proposed plan for this project, the following existing roadway characteristics will be preserved or enhanced:

  • On-Street Parking;
  • Bike Lanes Between 27th Avenue and 35th Avenue;
  • Local Street Configuration with Addition of Shared Lane Markings between 39th Avenue and 43rd Avenue.
