Once the patient is fully immersed in the cooling bag, which is filled with ice, firefighter-paramedics constantly reevaluate vital signs including their temperature. The patient is removed from the bag when their temperature drops to 101 degrees. This method has been proven to be effective in treating heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and exhaustion.

In previous years, the Phoenix Fire Department has faced challenges in obtaining enough ice during peak summer months due to high demand.

Fry's has answered the department's call for help with replenishing ice in between calls by donating $50 gift cards to each of Phoenix's 60 fire stations, totaling $3,000. This generous donation will help ensure that Phoenix Firefighters have an adequate supply of ice to use when responding to heat-related emergencies.

"Partnerships like these are essential in Phoenix during the summer months," said District 7 Councilman Carlos Galindo-Elvira. “The fast-cooling method is used multiple times a day to battle heat illness and emergencies. This donation will greatly assist our fire department in purchasing ice throughout the summer, which has proven to be a crucial component in their life-saving efforts."

“As extreme heat continues in Phoenix, this couldn't happen at a better time," Phoenix Fire Chief Mike Duran added. “With Councilman Carlos Galindo-Elvira's support and the donation from Fry's Food Stores, this bolsters the Phoenix Fire Department's efforts in responding to emergencies, ensuring that firefighters and paramedics have the resources they need to perform their life-saving duties effectively."

“Fry's is always focused on supporting the communities where we live and work," said Fry's Food Stores president, Monica Garnes. “We are proud to partner with the Phoenix Fire Department to help save the lives of Arizonans. We're grateful to Councilman Galindo-Elvira and Phoenix Firefighters for all they do to keep our community safe, especially during these hot summer months."

https://www.phoenix.gov/district7Newsdistrict-7
