Phoenix Park Amenities Will Begin Reopening March 17https://www.phoenix.gov/newsroom/parks-and-recreation/1807Parks and Recreation3/16/2021 11:30:00 PMhttps://www.phoenix.gov/newssite/Lists/NewsArticle/Attachments/1807/playground_park_sign.JPGPhoenix Park Amenities Will Begin Reopening March 17<div class="ExternalClassAA8E113FEB314A8EA6375364374087D9"><html> <p style="text-align:left;">The Phoenix City Council approved a plan during its Tuesday meeting to begin reopening the city's outdoor recreational amenities tomorrow (March 17), as well as procedures to resume athletic field reservations and local tournaments (teams from Arizona only) this month (March 22), and open select city pools this summer. The Council also approved Easter weekend restrictions for parks citywide.<br></p><div style="text-align:left;"> </div><p style="text-align:left;">"The COVID numbers are encouraging, and suggest that we are headed in the right direction," Mayor Kate Gallego said. "From the start, we've made data- and science-based decisions to ensure the safety and well-being of Phoenix residents. Today, with the decision to cautiously and carefully return to play, we are again following what the science is telling us. Yet, while we want our residents, especially children, to get out into the fresh air, we need to remember that the pandemic is not over. I encourage every individual to stay vigilant and take safety precautions including masks and physical distancing."</p><div style="text-align:left;"> </div><p>Effective Wednesday, the process to reopen ramadas and picnic tables, basketball and volleyball courts, fitness equipment and sports complexes will begin in all city parks. All other park amenities have been open since October 8, 2020, following a Council vote one day earlier, and all city parks, hiking trails and golf courses have maintained normal hours of operation throughout the pandemic. Use of some city park amenities has been restricted intermittently since a Council decision on April 2, 2020. While all ramadas will reopen, they remain available for first-come, first-served use only. The ramada reservation process continues to be paused until further notice.<br></p><div style="text-align:left;"> </div><p style="text-align:left;">Athletic field reservations and local tournaments at facilities managed by the city's Parks and Recreation Department will resume effective March 22. Reservations and tournaments at those facilities have been paused since December 3, 2020. Organizations and teams participating in activities on these fields will be required to follow various safety procedures; including having spectators, officials and coaches wear a mask or face covering; maintaining six feet between the field and spectators; and having an on-site contact to work with city staff.</p><div style="text-align:left;"> </div><p style="text-align:left;">The Parks and Recreation Department will open the following 12 city pools this summer: Cortez, Deer Valley, El Prado, Encanto, Falcon, Maryvale, Paradise Valley, Pecos, Perry, Starlight, Sunnyslope and University. Those pools will operate at a reduced capacity, have modified open swim and swimming lesson formats, and staff will follow an enhanced cleaning protocol. Youth age 17 and younger will receive free admission for open swim at all pools through the city's Kool Kids program.</p><div style="text-align:left;"> </div><p style="text-align:left;">The pools will operate on the city's normal seasonal schedule, and be open six days a week from May 29 to August 1 (closed Fridays), and on Saturdays and Sundays only from August 7 to September 6.</p><div style="text-align:left;"> </div><p style="text-align:left;">Swim and dive teams, the water basketball league, and other aquatics activities and special events will not be offered this summer. Additional details about the 2021 pool season, and information regarding registration for swimming lessons, will be available later this month. </p><div style="text-align:left;"> </div><p style="text-align:left;">During the Easter holiday weekend (April 3 to 4), all city parks and amenities will remain open, but parking lots will be closed (those with an accessibility placard will be allowed access). Additionally, grilling and large gatherings will be prohibited. Historically during Easter weekend, thousands of visitors gather in city parks.</p><div style="text-align:left;"> </div><p style="text-align:left;">Being outdoors is important for health and wellness, and the Parks and Recreation Department encourages residents to get outside and exercise. Community members using the city's outdoor recreational amenities should continue to follow these guidelines. </p><ul style="text-align:left;" class="" dir=""><li style="">Do not use public recreational amenities if you are exhibiting symptoms of illness </li><li style="">Wear a mask or face covering </li><li style="">Bring your own wipes and hand sanitizer <br></li><li style="">Keep a safe distance of six feet or more from others </li></ul><div style="text-align:left;"> </div><p style="text-align:left;">Detailed information about the city's outdoor recreational options and free virtual recreation and fitness programs is available at <a href="/parks/" target="_blank">Phoenix.gov/Parks</a>.<br></p><br></html></div>https://www.phoenix.gov/parksNewsparks-and-recreationA playground in a city parkParks & Rec@PhoenixParks #PHXPlays #HikeRight #swimPHX #PHXSummerGregg Bach602-350-1506602-262-4994gregg.bach@phoenix.govhttps://www.phoenix.gov/newssite/Lists/MediaContact/Attachments/22/Gregg_Bach.jpgPhoenixParksThe Phoenix City Council approved a plan during its March 16 meeting to begin reopening the city’s outdoor recreational amenities effective March 17.

100 Year Old City Flag will be on display at Phoenix City Hallhttps://www.phoenix.gov/newsroom/phxtv/2149PHXTV11/23/2021 9:00:00 PMhttps://youtu.be/SGGFvXW5IRA100 Year Old City Flag will be on display at Phoenix City Hall<div class="ExternalClass3BDFE9D342F646ABBF78D7E3ADD269B1"><html> <p>In 1921 Phoenix was a small city of 48,000 and residents were optimistic about the future. Phoenicians felt they needed a symbol of their prosperity and so the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce conducted a contest to design what would become the official flag of the city of Phoenix. The winning design is a 52 inch by 66 inch rectangle of heavy grade soft blue silk taffeta with an orange fringe. Embroidered in the center is a phoenix bird over a gold flame sunburst background. A white ribbon scroll at the bottom is embroidered with the legend, "City of Phoenix, Arizona". Back in 1921 the flag cost $175.<br></p><p>At the unveiling of the flag in the Phoenix City Hall Atrium, Mayor Kate Gallego said,<br>"Just like the Phoenix Rising, our flag is on display again, reminding us of the history of our great city. It's a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the City of Phoenix. Our history helps us build and move towards our future."</p><p>The City of Phoenix Official Flag is considered a public record and Phoenix City Clerk Denise Archibald is in charge of taking care of it.</p><p>Archibald said, "The City of Phoenix Flag was adopted by ordinance on November 23rd., 1921 and it has been under the care of the city clerk.  We ensure that the flag is kept in a safe and secure environment that's conducive to its preservation and conservation. Now we are here celebrating the 100-year anniversary of this flag. It will be on display at City Hall in the atrium between November 23rd. and the end of December. Then it will come back to the city clerk for safekeeping. I believe next year we will go ahead and try to maintain the flag, as we usually do, and have some conservation efforts completed on it just to make sure that it's always preserved and in a good state."</p><p>Much like the mythical Phoenix Bird, the first official city of Phoenix flag has risen again from the dust of time.</p><p>"I think the flag is beautiful" said City Clerk Denise Archibald. "The history is rich and we're just proud to be able to keep it safe and in good condition and will continue to do so for many years to come. I'm just excited that we have this opportunity to celebrate its 100-year anniversary."<br></p><p><span id="ms-rterangepaste-end"></span><br></p> </html></div>https://www.phoenix.gov/phxtvVideo
