Keep Your Dog Safe on the Trails
Check the Weather: Dogs are not allowed on trails when temperatures exceed 100°F. (Phoenix City Code 8-3, 24-54)
Choose the Right Trail: Consider your dog’s age, health, fitness level, and breed. Dogs with shorter snouts may need easier routes and more breaks.
Test the Ground: Avoid burns by making sure the ground temperature is not too hot. Not sure? Lay your hand flat on the ground for 10 seconds. If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for them.
Bring Water: Keep your dog hydrated throughout the hike.
Use a Leash: A leash 6 feet or shorter is required. (Phoenix City Code 8-14)
Pack Poop Bags: Pick up and carry out dog waste. (Phoenix City Code 27-12)
Watch for Heatstroke: Seek shade and monitor for signs like heavy panting, drooling, exhaustion, or vomiting. Cool your dog immediately if symptoms appear.
Stay on Designated Trails: Protect your dog from cacti and desert wildlife. (Phoenix City Code 24-36)
Consider Paw Booties: Great for rough terrain or warm conditions.
