ARTIST: Al Price
ENGINEERS: SVR, Inc.
LOCATION: Ray Road and Thunderhill Place, Ahwatukee Foothills
TYPE: Pedestrian bridge
MATERIALS: Concrete and painted steel box tubing and expanded metal
Phoenix sculptor Al Price designed the double-helix form of the bridge cage to convey a sense of geometric movement. The complex metalwork casts changing shadow patterns throughout the day. Price developed the cage design after conducting a series of bridge-making workshops with 4th graders who would use the bridge to cross Ray Road and reach Kyrene Monte Vista Elementary School. Throughout the design process, he worked closely with Erin Flinton of Al Price Studio, SVR, Inc. engineers and the Street Transportation Department to develop the cage, pier and railing designs. Stinger Welding, Inc., built the cage with box tubing and expanded metal mesh. The bridge was Price’s first public art commission.
This project was commissioned by the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture with Streets percent-for-art funds.
