What you'll do

The Digital Communications and Projects Assistant will have three primary focus areas: digital communications management, technical and administrative support, and assist on this season’s creative projects. GBC focusing their 8th season on developing the educational branch of the company. GBC is committed to cultivating a community of trauma-informed creatives, educators, and arts leaders who are committed to divesting from old systems and societal norms and who are ready to invest in the evolution of their communities, organizations, and themselves. The educational branch provides training in somatic movement technique, Trauma-Informed Creative Practices, the Play in the Grey philosophy, as well as creative tools and practices classes featuring GBC’s repertoire work. The DCPA will provide support in the planning, marketing, and developing relationships within the community. In addition to the educational branch, there are smaller pop-up events taking place throughout the season where the DCPA is expected to provide support with event ticketing, rehearsals, and audience surveys. The DCPA works primarily with the founder of Grey Box Collective, Molly W. Schenck. The individual in this role can anticipate gaining a unique set of skills and perspective of arts entrepreneurship within the context of the Phoenix area.​

Specific Responsibilities

Grey Box Collective is a one-of-a-kind arts organization in the nation. The way we work (as in how we develop performances,  how we communicate with each other, how the organization is structured overall) is incredibly forward-thinking. The past few years have provided the space to realign the organization and it's time for big strides moving into next season. This student worker would be able to be a part of those big steps.

Desired qualifications

We welcome individuals from a wide range of studies and experience including: social entrepreneurship, non-profit and/or for-profit organization, administration, and leadership, digital media, marketing, public relations, and stage management and/or other performance management roles. Individuals are expected to embody and practice radical compassion, intrinsic virtuosity, and efficient, effective and consistent communication. Individuals in this role must be open to evolving professional practices and dynamic responsibilities within the framework of a contemporary arts company. We operate in community which sometimes requires us to adapt to circumstances beyond our control to support the humans we create with. We are particularly interested in working with individuals who are interested in the intersection of trauma and creativity and/or trauma-informed creative practices in theory and practice. Individuals who wish to work with GBC must understand that Grey Box Collective is a trauma-informed arts organization committed to holding compassionate spaces for ourselves and others and ensure sustainable practices are embedded in all that we do. Through our actions, reflections, and art-making, we aim to challenge and re-shape the status quo in our organization, in our bodies, and our communities. 

Meet the supervisor

Founder Molly W. Schenck

Molly W. Schenck (MFA, MEd.) is a multi-hyphenated arts and somatics practitioner whose body of work is rooted in a quest to understand humans. She is fascinated with human movement - whether that a social justice movement, individuals persisting through systems, or how a body moves through space and time. She is also interested in what interrupts the full expression of movement (stress, trauma, burnout, injuries, chronic pain, etc.). This has guided the evolution of her studies and career path. She worked in higher education as an adjunct professor and administrator for ten years. She taught mind body and group fitness classes for twelve years. She specializes in the intersection of creativity and trauma and is the creator of Trauma-Informed Creative Practices. She is the founder of Grey Box Collective (an interdisciplinary, experimental, post-dramatic, trauma-informed arts organization that devises original performances around topics of social and emotional wellbeing i.e. makes weird art about tough stuff). She is also a certified Trauma Support Specialist, Personal Trainer, a 500-hour experienced yoga teacher (focused on asana, pranayama, and meditation), a registered somatic dance educator and somatic movement therapist. For more information visit http://mollywschenck.com.

Grey Box Collective

Grey Box Collective (GBC) is a trauma-informed, interdisciplinary, experimental, and post-dramatic performing arts organization who creates original shows about social-emotional wellbeing (i.e. we make weird art about tough stuff). The works are considered artistic vehicles for social change that offer brave and supportive spaces for audiences and artists. Beyond the stage, we offer workshops and trainings in Trauma-Informed Creative Practices for our community to support sustainable creativity, to promote an understanding of trauma, and share a methodology for developing art in safe ways. Additionally, we have an online store and podcast to extend our reach.

About the program

The Phoenix ArtCorps​​

The Phoenix ArtCorps is a student employment program from the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture  that seeks to provide students with​ the comprehensive skills, mentorship, and experience ​they need to launch their arts and culture careers. Over the course of the 2023-2024 academic year​, each student works 400 hours for $17/hr (around 15 to 20 hours a week), with additional stipends and professional development opportunities. To apply, students must be current or recently graduated undergraduate students at a community college, university, or other institution of higher education based in Phoenix (or live in Phoenix themselves). Applicants must be at least 18 years old. There are no other enrollment requirements. Students do not need to be majoring in the arts or similar fields to apply.
