Meet the supervisor
Kirk Johnson is a performer and educator that believes that the zip code of a child should not dictate their access to music education. Out of this belief, he founded SOUNDS Academy, a nonprofit music education organization that teaches, mentors, and provides musical experiences and opportunities for underserved youth. SOUNDS Academy teaches character values through music education. Kirk’s musical journey began in Boston, Massachusetts where he learned to play the violin and viola, took theory classes, played in orchestras, touring countries like Italy, Mexico, and Cuba. Today, Kirk has guided SOUNDS Academy in providing over 47,000 lessons and classes to children, and has impacted 19,000 students through the Musical Access program, where students attend concerts and are introduced to instruments in their Instrument Petting Zoos. SOUNDS Academy is also making an academic impact with 100% of the students in their SOLO program being accepted into college on scholarship. As the manager of this organization, he believes in giving his team the guidance necessary for them to learn key tasks and meet project deadlines, while balancing this with giving them the opportunity to add their creative spirits. His team consists of individuals on a mission to impact music education.
About this organization
SOUNDS Academy is an organization that teaches, mentors, and provides musical experiences and opportunities for underserved youth. Students receive instruction on all instruments and voice. We teach these values in our Musical Access Program; connecting students to live music and instruments through our Instrument Petting Zoos, our School Programs for lower income schools and community centers, our SOLO Program; providing one-on-one instruction, and The Collective Ensembles; teaching music theory and ensemble playing techniques.
