Planning & Development's Research Team provides population, socioeconomic, and land use data to both city staff and the general public. We work closely with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) to ensure that the population estimates and projections for the city of Phoenix are as accurate as possible. This work includes serving on the MAG Population Technical Advisory Committee (POPTAC) in the development of analytical and population projection methodology.
The Research Team also collects and analyzes data from a variety of public and private sources in order to characterize the pace of development within the city of Phoenix.
Please contact us if you cannot find the data you require within this website. Our mission is to provide you with the data or resources necessary for you to accomplish your goals.
How many people are there in the city of Phoenix?
Boy do we get asked that question a lot! Here's the latest:
- April 1, 2010: 1,445,632 (US Census Bureau, 2010 Census)
- July 1, 2011: 1,451,966 (MAG Jurisdiction Population Update, approved 12/7/11)
Does Planning & Development have any projections for the growth of Phoenix?
All official projections for population growth within Maricopa County are produced by MAG, every 5 years. The last set of projections was produced in 2007 and is no longer reliable due to unforeseen economic changes in the time since. New projections will be produced by MAG during 2012 and will be provided here as soon as they are available.
