About the Project

A future paving project along 31st Avenue between Bethany Home Road and Glendale Avenue provides an opportunity for the Phoenix Street Transportation Department to review restriping options that would better accommodate the needs of all roadway users.

The number of travel lanes will remain the same, but proposed options would narrow the lanes and remove some parking to widen bike lanes.

The proposed bike lanes would connect to Maryland Avenue and to 31st Avenue at Bethany Home Road.

Bike lanes add space between people driving and people walking or biking for increased protection from vehicles, improved safety and added comfort. Additionally, the visual narrowing of the lane widths to accommodate bike lanes will help guide vehicles and deter speeding.

Pavement maintenance (new asphalt) is scheduled for summer/fall 2024, and restriping would happen shortly after paving was completed.

Proposed Changes

The department is proposing the following for this corridor:

  • Option A: No change - one driving lane and one bike lane in each direction, on-street parking on the west side of the roadway, parking permitted in the bike lane on the east side of the roadway at night and during weekends
  • Option B: The driving lane in each direction would be narrowed, bike lane parking removed to allowed for widening of the bike lane on both sides of the roadway where space allows
