Hope and Unity: Commemorating 25 Years Since 9/11

In the wake of September 11, 2001, the nation stood united through the spirit of service, courage and hope. This youth‑centered initiative honors and captures that essence by engaging young people in meaningful and age‑appropriate activities across the City. Young people will celebrate first responders and heroes that continue to inspire the Phoenix community today.

From Sept. 7 to Sept. 12, there will be opportunities and ways you can get involved and help be a part of this time of reflection and honor.

The overarching goal is to empower Phoenix youth to shape how Phoenix commemorates the 25th anniversary of 9/11 through meaningful service, creativity, gratitude, and community impact.
Youth will take part in a Citywide Day of Remembrance, choosing projects such as neighborhood cleanups, beautification efforts, care packages for first responders, and acts of kindness that uplift their neighborhoods. Reflection activities, hero‑focused learning, and leadership opportunities further strengthen civic engagement and help young people build skills while honoring those who serve.

Get Involved

The Youth and Education Office held focus group sessions with Phoenix youth ages 14 to 21 across the City who provided input on how they envision commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Some things that came out of these discussions was put together in what has been organized into a "Menu of Services," which outline ways everyone can get involved and do something to help unite and uplift everyone in their community. See each dropdown below for a list of ideas.

  • Campaign with youth testimonial and event highlights
  • Host a random acts of kindness challenge
  • Video and autio announcements by community leaders, elected officials, features in airports, public access channels and other methods of public outreach
  • Use hashtags: #PHX911Day, #PHXYouthServe911, PHXRemembers911

  • Assemble and seliver thank-you gifts baskets to first responders
  • Create and distribute thank-you cards and letters to first responders
  • Organize meal deliveries for first responder teams
  • Coordinate community clean-up and beautification projects
  • Assemble heat relief kits for vulnerable populations

  • Host speaker panels, feature community leaders and heroes
  • Organize volunteer fairs to connect youth with local non-profits
  • Coordinate school assemblies incorporating ways to honor 9/11

  • Plan public service events honoring 9/11 heroes
  • Organize candlelight vigils or remembrance walks
  • Host interfaith prayer services or moments of silence
