Arizona Canalscape Phase 1: 35th Ave to 19th Ave
The Street Transportation Department is conducting a pre-design study to evaluate a two-mile segment of the Arizona Canal between 35th Avenue and 19th Avenue. The study will assess the north bank as an active transportation route for people of all ages and abilities, whether they walk, ride or roll.
The study will assess the north bank as an active transportation route for canal users evaluate safe concepts for traversing underpasses and pathway intersections with arterial and collector streets, provide concepts for community centered features and amenities, and enhance connectivity to the upcoming Village transit-oriented community development.
This study is a natural outcome of what the communities around Interstate 17 desired as expressed in the Transit Oriented Communities plan developed jointly with the Planning and Development Department. The Transit Oriented Communities plan was developed with extensive community input over more than 50 public meetings and multiple Village Planning Committee meetings.
The Arizona Canalscape Phase 1 study is a continuing partnership with Salt River Project (SRP) to develop areas of the canal bank in the central region of Phoenix. SRP operates the canal system, which plays an important role in the City's water supply.
Study Schedule
The pre-design study began in November 2025 and is scheduled to conclude in late 2026. Pre-design includes opportunities for the surrounding community to share in the development of the ultimate concepts. The City will then work to fund and execute a full engineering design for the Canalscape, with more opportunities for public input in the design phase.
Fun Facts
- Did you know the Phoenix metro area has 180 miles of canals? That's more miles of canals than Venice and Amsterdam combined: Venice has about 26 miles and Amsterdam has about 60 miles.
- The nine canals that make up the Valley's canal system were developed over the past 100 years, beginning in 1883.
