Americans for the Arts conducted the sixth Arts & Economic Prosperity Study (AEP6) to document the economic and social benefits of the nation's nonprofit arts and culture industry.  The Phoenix Office of Arts + Culture joined the study on behalf of the City of Phoenix

The study was conducted in 373 diverse communities and regions across the country, representing all 50 states and Puerto Rico.

What were the results from the AEP6 Study?

Key Findings

  • Phoenix’s nonprofit arts and culture industry generated $449.9 million in economic activity in 2022-2023.
  • This economic activity
    • Supported 7,686 jobs
    • Provided $323.5 million in personal income to residents
    • Generated $92.5 million in local, state, and federal government tax revenue.

Spending by arts and culture audiences generates valuable commerce for local merchants, a value-add that few other industries can compete with.

How did the Phoenix participate in this study?

  1. 50 participating nonprofit Arts and Culture organizations collected over 749 audience surveys. We sent the completed surveys to Americans for the Arts to complete the economic analysis.
  2. 102 nonprofit Arts and Culture organizations actively participated in completing an organizational survey.

In Phoenix, not only is the arts and culture sector deeply embedded in our city's societal fabric, but it is also a key economic driver that creates new jobs and generates important tax revenues. We are proud to be an arts city where more than five million residents and visitors annually participate in our nonprofit arts and culture programs. As our city continues to grow, arts and culture are a vital part of our commitment to creating more connected and enriched communities.
