International Investigator of the Year

On Saturday, March 31, 2012 Phoenix Fire Department Fire Investigations was informed that Captain Willie Nelson was named the 'International Investigator of the Year' by the International Association of Arson Investigators.  This is an amazing and very prestigious honor for both Willie and Phoenix Fire Department.  The International Association of Arson Investigators has many responsibilities, most importantly is the oversight and adoption of regulations in NFPA 921.  The NFPA 921 is the international guide for fire investigations and used in many legal proceedings and decisions.  This group has a large international membership that includes both sworn and civilian investigators and experts for electrical and product failures.  The competition for the award is stiff and there are many highly respected nominees that weren't selected.  The choice of Willie was well placed and well deserved.

Willie was presented the award in Dover Delaware on April 23rd at the IAAI International Conference in front of his peers from around the world.

Arson Facts

Sadie, the Arson Dog

The Phoenix Fire Department’s Arson Unit is lucky to have one of only two Arson Dogs in the State of Arizona.  Sadie is a two-year-old chocolate Labrador Retriever.  She began her training with her handler, Captain Fred Andes, in Alfred, Maine, back in April 2007.  Their training was conducted by Paul Gallager, the foremost K-9 trainer of drug, bomb and arson dogs.  He runs the training program for State Farm Insurance. Sadie is actually sponsored by State Farm.  They purchased the dog, and paid for all the training of both the handler and the K-9, including the flight to and from Maine!  The Phoenix Fire Department pays for her food and vet bills.
