​Fleet Technician/Equipment Service Worker (ESW) II Apprentice ​​​

​​Job Description: 

​​Apprentices learn the basic terminology of classroom Automotive Technology in a college environment and on the job training on a vast variety of Equipment, specifically sanitation refuse truck, this includes general preventative maintenance (PM’s), small to large repairs and troubleshooting to include hydraulic, electrical, brakes and mechanical repairs, while assisting Skilled workers in job assignments within the ESWII job description.  

Program Details:

Apprentices must successfully and satisfactorily complete all assigned classroom and equipment training and 4,000 on-the-job training (OJT) hours and minimum 288 related training instruction hours. During this period of the program, apprentices will be non-classified and paid as a ESW II apprentice. After successful completion apprentices will promote into the ESW II classification and serve a 12-month probationary period. 

Salary:

  • $18.34 / hour starting wage 

  • $18.98 / hour after 1,000 OJT hours 

  • $19.64 / hour after 2,000 OJT hours 

  • $20.34 / hour after 3,000 OJT hours  

  • $21.54 / hour after 4,000 OJT hours  

Starting Pay Upon Graduation $44,803 

City of Phoenix will assist apprentice to obtain while on the job: 

  • Complete All Required Community College Classes 

  • Graduate the ESW II Apprenticeship Program 

  • Earn State of Arizona Completion Certificate 

  • Earn Department of Labor Completion Certificate 

  • Promote to Equipment Service Worker II ​

Minimum Qualifications (these are subject to change per program requirements): 

  • Ability to read and comprehend written material at a level appropriate for the class.  

  • Must have High School Diploma or GED at the time of hire.  

  • Must successfully attend a fleet services information session. 

  • Able to perceive the full range of the color spectrum.  

  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.  

  • Able to work at heights greater than 10 feet and move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet). 

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.  

  • Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust for extended periods of time.   

  • Must a valid Class D or equivalent license for one year and prove one year of driving experience in a vehicle other than a motorcycle.
