Job Description: 

Apprentices learn to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems and equipment. They become knowledgeable in various aspects of energy conservation, medium voltage systems, airfield lighting, water/wastewater treatment operations, in both commercial and industrial applications. 

Program Details:

Apprentices must successfully and s​​​​​​​​atisfactorily complete all assigned classroom and equipment training and 8,000 on-the-job training (OJT) hours and minimum 900 related training instruction hours. During this period of the program, apprentices will be non-classified and paid as an Electrician apprentice. After successful completion apprentices will promote into the Electrician classification and serve a 12-month probationary period. 

Salary:

  • $19.59 / hour starting wage 

  • $20.57 / hour after 1,000 OJT hours

  • $21.60 / hour after 2,000 OJT hours  

  • $22.67 / hour after 3,000 OJT hours 

  • $23.81 / hour after 4,000 OJT hours  

  • $25.00 / hour after 5,000 OJT hours 

  • $26.25 / hour after 6,000 OJT hours  

  • $27.56 / hour after 7,000 OJT hours

  • $31.82 / hour after 8,000 OJT hours  

Starting Pay Upon Graduation $66,186 

City of Phoenix will assist apprentice to obtain while on the job: 

  • Attend day or evening classes one night every other week 

  • Rotate between Aviation, Public Works and Water Department 

  • Complete All Required Electrician Apprenticeship Training Assignment 

  • Graduate the Electrician Apprenticeship Program 

  • Earn State of Arizona Completion Certificate

  • Earn Department of Labor Completion Certificate

  • Promote to Electrician 

Minimum Qualifications (these are subject to change per program requirements):

  • Ability to read and comprehend written material at a level appropriate for the class. 

  • Must have High School Diploma or GED at the time of hire. 

  • Must successfully pass an Apprentice Aptitude Test with an 80% score or better. 

  • Able to perceive the full range of the color spectrum. 

  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required. 

  • Able to work at heights greater than 10 feet and move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less) 

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance. 

  • Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
