​Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Specialist Apprentice 

Dept: Water​ and Wastewater

Job Description: Apprentices learn to install, maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair industrial process control equipment.  They gain experience on a wide variety of electronic instrume​ntation applications in wastewater and water treatment operations. 

Program Details: 

Apprentices must successfully and satisfactorily complete all assigned classroom and equipment training and 6,000 on-the-job training (OJT) hours and minimum 432 related training instruction hours. During this period of the program, apprentices will be non-classified and paid as an I&C Specialist apprentice. After successful completion apprentices will promote into the I&C Specialist classification and serve a 12-month probationary period. 

 Salary:

  • $18.74 / hour starting wage 

  • $19.67 / hour after 1,000 OJT hours  

  • $20.66 / hour after 2,000 OJT hours 

  • $21.69 / hour after 3,000 OJT hours  

  • $22.78 / hour after 4,000 OJT hours

  • $23.92 / hour after 5,000 OJT hours 

  • $27.49 / hour after 6,000 OJT hours   

Starting Pay Upon Graduation $57,179 

City of Phoenix will assist apprentice to obtain while on the job: 

  • Successfully complete all required I&C Specialist Apprenticeship Training Courses 

  • Graduate the I&C Specialist Apprenticeship Program 

  • Earn State of Arizona Completion Certificate 

  • Earn Department of Labor Completion Certificate 

  • Promote to I&C Specialist 

Minimum Qualifications (these are subject to change per program requirements):

  • Ability to read and comprehend written material at a level appropriate for the class. 

  • Must have High School Diploma or GED at the time of hire. 

  • Must successfully pass an Apprentice Aptitude Test with an 80% score or better. 

  • Able to perceive the full range of the color spectrum. 

  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required. 

  • Able to work at heights greater than 10 feet and move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less) 

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance. 

  • Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.  ​
