The next regularly scheduled candidate election for Mayor and Council Districts 1, 3, 5, and 7 is November 3, 2020. To get on to the ballot, candidates must submit nomination petitions with the required number of valid signatures to the City Clerk Department by 5 p.m. on July 6, 2020. Mayoral candidates must collect 1,500 valid signatures and Council Member Candidates must collect 200 valid signatures.

Prior elections required candidates to collect signatures from eligible voters in-person. At this time, the City Clerk Department in partnership with the Secretary of State’s Office is launching a new process where candidates can create online nomination petitions and voters can sign candidate petitions electronically using the Secretary of State’s Office online E-Qual system.

How it works: Starting May 4, 2020 and after filing a Statement of Interest form with the Phoenix City Clerk Department, candidates can create their candidate nomination petitions online using the E-Qual system. Once created, the candidate’s petition will be available for eligible voters to sign electronically once the circulation period begins on May 7, 2020.

Voters looking to sign a candidate nomination petition online will be able to go to the Secretary of State’s E-qual online petition portal starting May 7, 2020, enter the required identifying information (which will be verified against the statewide voter registration database), and see the nomination petitions they are eligible to sign.
