Vice Mayor Takes Leadership Roles in Three Key Subcommittees

As the Phoenix City Council begins a new session, Vice Mayor Ann O'Brien continues her leadership role across three critical subcommittees focused on economic development, public safety, and community services.

O’Brien’s appointments reflect her track record of innovation, including a comprehensive Housing Solutions Plan, advocating for AI technology to improve public safety, and spearheading an alternative court for people who are unhoused, that leads with compassion while still holding people accountable.

Economic Development and the Arts Subcommittee – continuing as Chair

Vice Mayor O’Brien’s selection as Chair reflects her deep understanding of Phoenix's economic landscape and her proven ability to drive results. Her recent unveiling of a comprehensive Housing Solutions Plan demonstrates her commitment to tackling Phoenix's affordability crisis through innovative local policies, regional partnerships, and strategic state-level advocacy.

Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee – continuing as member

Vice Mayor O'Brien previously served as Chair of the Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee and continues as an active member overseeing police, fire, and court operations. Her recent policy successes include ensuring public safety personnel have access to the latest technology, including drones to support first responders in the field and AI to better support 911 dispatchers.

Community Services and Education Subcommittee – member

Vice Mayor O'Brien's appointment to the Community Services and Education Subcommittee reflects her deep roots in educational leadership, including as current Chair of the Board of Directors for WestEd, a nonpartisan research agency focused on improving learning opportunities, and a past president of the Deer Valley Unified School District Governing Board.

O’Brien is focused on preventing homelessness and helping vulnerable residents. She supported a pilot program to provide civil legal aid for residents facing eviction and is committed to making the program permanent.
