Phoenix Youth Leading Citywide Effort to Commemorate 9/11

PHOENIX - Twenty-five years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Phoenix youth are leading a series of initiatives designed to help shape remembrance, service, and unity.

Through the City’s Office of Youth and Education, young people across Phoenix have spent weeks participating in focus groups, sharing ideas, and designing events to ensure the lessons of that day continue to inspire future generations.

“By taking ownership of this commemoration, our young residents are demonstrating that ’Never Forget’ was more than a motto — they are proving that the values of service and compassion transcend generations,” Mayor Kate Gallego said. “This milestone gives all of us an opportunity to reflect on the heroism in our community, including those who have served in Arizona Task Force 1, and strengthen our community for the future."

Councilwoman Ann O'Brien, who was appointed by Mayor Gallego to lead Phoenix's commemoration efforts, said, "The greatest tribute we can pay is ensuring every generation understands the significance of September 11, 2001, and why it still matters today. Watching our young people embrace that responsibility with reverence and genuine curiosity has been inspiring.”

The Office of Youth and Education is working closely with students and organizations to ensure their ideas shape Phoenix’s commemoration.

"From the beginning, our goal has been to empower young people to create something meaningful," said Tim Valencia, Director of the Office of Youth and Education. "Their work reflects a powerful commitment to learn from those who lived through 9/11, recognize the first responders who continue to serve today, and help build a stronger, more connected community."

Among the youth-led efforts:

· A commemorative art contest inviting students to reflect on themes of service, resilience, remembrance and unity. The deadline to submit is August 19. Download the application in English and Spanish.

• ·A dedicated 9/11 webpage featuring educational resources, community events and opportunities to participate throughout Phoenix. Visit the webpage.
• PHXTeens and First Responders: An Evening of Remembrance and Unity scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Brett Tarver Learning Center.
• Additional youth-led activities being developed in partnership with PHXTeens and other community organizations.

In the coming weeks, the City will announce a special program honoring the members of Arizona Task Force 1 who deployed to Ground Zero following the September 11 attacks. The event will include youth participants, with meaningful conversations to ensure the legacy of service, sacrifice, and resilience continues to inspire future leaders.
