Modernization Funding for Fire Station 46
The City of Phoenix announced $850,000 in federal funding secured by Rep. Greg Stanton to renovate and modernize Fire Station 46 in Ahwatukee. The investment will support upgrades designed to improve firefighter health, wellness, and accessibility, with a focus on sleep‑friendly dormitory improvements and modifications needed to bring the station into full ADA compliance.
The project addresses long‑standing challenges firefighters face, including chronic sleep disruption tied to irregular schedules and high‑stress operations. Planned dormitory updates will introduce modern design elements that reduce noise, increase comfort, and support more restorative rest. Additional accessibility improvements will ensure the station meets federal ADA standards, strengthening equity and usability throughout the facility.
The announcement reflects a larger trend in cities nationwide, where fire departments are modernizing older stations to improve the long‑term well‑being of firefighters. Upgrades such as improved ventilation, designated decontamination areas, private bunkrooms, and wellness‑centered shared spaces are increasingly common as departments adapt to new safety standards and operational demands. Phoenix has consistently prioritized such improvements, recognizing that high‑quality facilities directly support emergency‑response readiness.
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said the funding “represents an important investment in the people who protect our community every single day.” She added, “We appreciate Congressman Stanton’s partnership in helping us secure the resources needed to ensure our firefighters have a healthier and safer place to work.”
Phoenix City Councilmember Kevin Robinson, whose district includes Station 46, emphasized the value of reinvesting in long‑serving facilities. “Fire Station 46 has been a cornerstone of service for this area for decades. These upgrades are overdue, and we’re thankful for Congressman Stanton’s support in making sure our first responders have the modern infrastructure they deserve.”
The City will share design details and construction timelines as planning continues. The improvements at Fire Station 46 are expected to strengthen operational readiness and ensure Phoenix firefighters have facilities that reflect the high standards of their mission.
