Phoenix Fire Department Launches New E Bike Teams to Improve Mountain Rescue Response

The Phoenix Fire Department has introduced specialized electric‑bike units to enhance emergency response in the city’s mountain preserves. E-Bike teams began operating on September 23 and the first two e‑bike teams will begin operating out of Fire Stations 28 and 45.

The e‑bikes are designed to help firefighters reach patients more quickly in rugged terrain where traditional vehicles cannot easily access. Each station will deploy two e‑bikes mounted on support trucks, along with equipment bags containing medical supplies and rescue gear. In cases where air‑rescue technicians are involved, the teams will also carry equipment used during helicopter hoist operations.

During an emergency response, two firefighters will ride the e‑bikes into the preserve and make initial contact. Once on scene, they will manage rescue operations until additional crews arrive. After the patient is treated and prepared for transport, the bike team will leave the trail system while continuing to provide updates to ensure full accountability.

The new Phoenix Fire Department e‑bike teams represent a significant step toward faster, more efficient rescues in challenging mountain environments.
